Build a starter workshop around one real project.
Choose the measuring, cutting, fastening and storage jobs first. Add exact tools only where there is a gap.
Choose the first project and make a sequence of tasks before building a shopping list. Include measuring and layout, preparing material, drilling or fastening, holding the work, cleanup and storage. The sequence will reveal what you need now and what can wait. A large assortment of tools is not evidence that it covers the material, fastener and workholding requirements of your project.
Start the manual-tool research with a defined role. STANLEY 46-123 is a 12 in combination square; 10-079 is an InterLock retractable utility knife. They are exact examples for layout and utility-cutting research, not a promise that either performs every measurement or cutting operation. Check the material, blade and intended use before adding a tool. Record an exact model only after the role is clear, so size or a similar-looking handle does not silently change the selection.
Choose the powered tool from the operation and your existing setup. DEWALT DCD800B is a tool-only drill/driver to investigate if you already have manufacturer-supported 20V MAX power. Makita XPH14T is a separate LXT drill kit to investigate when the included batteries and charger fill a real need. These are two different platform and package paths, not a bundle to purchase together or a tested ranking of beginner tools.
List the items outside those boxes. Confirm the exact bits, appropriate blades, workholding, protective equipment and material-specific instructions for your project. This catalog does not present a complete kit for a particular build. If the task calls for a saw, router or another operation absent from your shortlist, resolve that requirement explicitly rather than treating a drill package as a substitute.
Plan where the tools will live and how they will be moved. DEWALT DWST17806 is a TSTAK deep box with a removable tray; it is supplied as storage rather than a filled tool kit. Measure the actual items you want to carry, including the charger and accessory cases, and check the current box dimensions and storage connections. A battery platform does not establish which storage family connects to another box.
Save a small shortlist tied to the task sequence. After each project, note which missing capability caused repeated interruptions; that becomes the next research question. This makes workshop growth more deliberate than buying every category at once. The examples here illustrate a selection process based on manufacturer documentation, without claims of hands-on experience or current bargain pricing.
