Match the abrasive and collection setup to the tool.
Pad diameter, attachment, hole pattern and wheel requirements are different decisions. Start with the material and operation.
Choose the operation and material first, then narrow the tool type. Random-orbit sanders, sheet sanders and angle grinders share a broad catalog category but use different accessory arrangements. Even an angle grinder with a supported sanding operation does not automatically take the discs used on a random-orbit sander. Keep the accessory manufacturer’s intended use with the tool instructions.
For round sanding discs, check three separate fields: diameter, attachment and extraction-hole pattern. DEWALT DCW210B and Bosch GEX18V-5N are 5 in examples with hook-and-loop attachment and eight-hole pads. This gives you a way to screen consumables, while the exact pad and abrasive instructions still decide suitability. The DCW210 Type 2 manual specifically excludes drywall applications, so its general sanding title should not become a drywall recommendation.
A quarter-sheet arrangement is a different purchase path. RYOBI PCL401B uses a paper clamp system and its manufacturer package prose lists a dust bag, sandpaper assortment and paper punch. Research the permitted sheet preparation and paper requirements for that model. Its 1/4-sheet format is not a smaller round-disc size and should not be compared as one.
For an angle grinder, add wheel type, dimensions, mounting hardware, speed rating and the required guard to the shortlist. Milwaukee’s 2880-20 instructions require a suitable accessory speed rating and matched guard arrangement; the package lists Type 27 and Type 1 clip-on guards. Its paddle switch without lock-on also differs from XAG16Z’s slide switch with lock-on. Compare the exact controls and instructions rather than assuming every braking grinder behaves the same way.
Plan collection as part of the complete setup. A supplied dust bag or tool port does not mean every hose connects directly, and a matching connector does not establish that the vacuum supports the material. Bosch lists specific hose and adapter options for GEX18V-5N. Save the tool, intended abrasive and required connection together, then verify the current instructions before buying. Tool Drip makes no measured finish, extraction or runtime ranking.
