Choose a clamp by opening, reach and how it operates.

Two clamps with the same nominal opening can offer different mechanisms and reach. Start with the workpiece arrangement.

Arrange the workpieces and any support or protective blocks before choosing a clamp. Measure the opening needed across the stack and the distance from its edge to the place you want the jaw to contact. Those are separate questions. An advertised opening alone does not tell you whether the jaws can reach the intended location or stay clear of the operation.

BESSEY GSCC2.512 is a screw-handle clamp with slip-clutch plates; IRWIN 1964718 is a one-handed grip clamp with quick-release trigger. Both exact records are 12 in examples. Compare the operating arrangement you can use while positioning the work, then check the manufacturer’s intended application. This is a difference in mechanism, not a Tool Drip claim that either holds every material better.

Keep throat reach visible. BESSEY documents a 2-1/2 in throat for GSCC2.512, and deeper-throat models in that family have different model numbers. IRWIN’s referenced page does not publish the same throat field, so that remains a question to resolve before ordering. A missing field in this catalog is not a zero dimension, absent feature or permission to copy a number from another clamp.

Read force statements with their wording intact. BESSEY publishes a clamping-force value; IRWIN describes up to a stated sustained force. The labels do not establish identical testing conditions or how much force you will apply to a particular workpiece. Check permitted uses and material requirements rather than using those figures as a lifting rating or an automatic ranking.

Save the exact opening variant and mechanism that suit the arrangement, then verify the package and jaw requirements at the source. The clamp records are each a single clamp; replacement pads or a group pictured in use are separate package questions. This workflow complements the measuring and fastening shortlist for a project without pretending a clamp purchase completes the whole workholding setup.
