Cobra or pliers wrench? Start with the jaw.

Two 10-inch KNIPEX tools serve different gripping needs despite their similar outlines.

Length alone is a poor way to choose between these two tools. KNIPEX 87 01 250 Cobra has serrated gripping surfaces; 86 03 250 Pliers Wrench has smooth parallel jaws. Look at the workpiece shape and surface before deciding which geometry belongs in your toolkit.

The Cobra’s teeth and the pliers wrench’s smooth faces make the intended contact different. KNIPEX describes the pliers wrench for applications including plated fittings. Treat that as a reason to investigate the smooth-jaw option, not a blanket promise that any finish will remain unmarked. Dirt, pressure, alignment and the workpiece still matter when using a gripping tool.

Compare the complete model number as well as the family. Similar-looking variants can change handle construction, finish or size. The two entries here both have plastic handles and are identified by KNIPEX as not 1000V insulated. Handle color or a soft grip is not an insulation specification; follow the manufacturer’s warning against use on live circuits.

Consider access in addition to maximum opening. The head and handles need room to move, and the workpiece must be held in a way the tool is intended to support. If you need controlled tightening to a specified torque, choose the appropriate measuring tool and procedure instead of estimating from grip pressure.

A useful purchase note is simple: record the shape you need to grip, whether the surface is delicate, the available clearance and the exact model. Those details make the comparison more useful than choosing whichever pliers happen to look most familiar.
